Women Leading the Charge at East Penn
Women aren’t just important to East Penn, they are essential. We are fortunate enough to have a long legacy of extraordinary women who have established our foundation, shaped our culture, and spurred us on to tremendous growth. To ensure their legacy will live on, East Penn has spearheaded a Women’s Leadership Initiative to empower women to grow and thrive.
Our Women’s Leadership Initiative seeks to increase opportunities for women in the East Penn family through programs like our women’s Lean In Circles and leadership workshops. Our goal is to invest in women and help them build their networks, increase their professional confidence, and open opportunities in engineering and production, traditionally areas with low numbers of women. Internship opportunities, seasonal experiences and a sales trainee program are also focused on recruiting, retaining and promoting women in our workplaces.
We are also passionate about empowering women to take on leadership roles. We provide continuous learning and self-reflection for our current employees, giving them the tools they need to have a long, fruitful careers with upward mobility into management roles.
“As part of our culture of respect and inclusion at East Penn, we treat advancing women in the organization as a business priority because we know diversity at all levels results in improved problem solving, better customer relations and better financial performance,” said Christy Weeber, East Penn CFO.
Our partnership with Women2Women (W2W) has also been a valuable resource for East Penn. Each year, we sponsor more women to attend W2W events to learn and network and grow individually. The partnership continues to flourish because both East Penn and W2W share a passion for empowering women.
As East Penn looks at our incredible past, we are so proud of what women have accomplished here. Looking at where we are today and into our promising future, we are equally proud that the women of East Penn will play an integral role in the continued success of not only our company, but the amazing community of Greater Reading.

Inspire…Lead…Advocate
Written by Kristin C. Eck
Almost every woman has a best friend who ignites passion, inspires enthusiasm, listens without interruptions, helps focus on strengths, and offers a safe environment for advocating views. Through these partnerships, women evolve, making them better students, mothers, advocates, and leaders. Alvernia Women’s Council (AWC) established a women’s network through community partnerships with Berks Women2Women and the Greater Reading community providing women with a program to enhance skills, provide mentorships, and educate themselves to advance in leadership roles. The AWC and Women2Women understand the importance of meeting women where they are in their life, career, and education. Their goals are to offer professional development through training, discounted educational opportunities, and life skill workshops.
On September 9th, the AWC will host a Leadership Summit entitled “Invest in Yourself. Engage. Connect. Celebrate” for students, alumni, faculty/staff, and friends. Meggan Kerber, associate vice president of institutional advancement, states that membership to the AWC is open to “any individual who is committed to enhancing the quality of life for Alvernia Women.” Students who attend Alvernia University learn the importance of connecting with the community through AWC. “Students can contribute to the Alvernia community through sports, service, or student leadership positions. Alvernia wants students to leave with the skills to be future leaders and genuinely good people,” said Molly Herbold ’22.
Along with the AWC, the university established the Office of Justice, Equity, and Inclusion to ensure the Alvernia community is one of inclusive thoughts, culture, ideals and vision. Alvernia is offering a spring class focusing on women and diversity. Alvernia University - Platinum Sponsor
Alvernia University’s partnership with Women2Women exemplifies the long-standing commitment we have had to the advancement and perseverance of women. In 2018, Alvernia celebrated its 60th Anniversary, and in the span of more than a half a century, what started in 1958 by the Bernardine Franciscan Sisters as a small women’s college, has become a regionally and nationally recognized comprehensive, competitive, multi-campus university.
Alvernia established its first Women’s Council (AWC) in 2018 to meet the demand for women’s advocacy, development, and empowerment at the University. Annually, the AWC hosts a signature Fall Luncheon, an all-female mentorship program, on-campus student programs focused on personal and professional development, and cultivation events meant to inspire and strengthen the engagement of AWC members to each other and the University.
Partnership with the Women2Women program not only brings immense benefit to our employees and students, but to W2W members as well. Any member of W2W is eligible to receive discounted tuition at the University. Throughout the year, sponsorship benefits allow Alvernia women to experience W2W programs as well as creating opportunities for students to attend events. This partnership not only creates a pathway for the next generation of female leaders but provides current leaders with the confidence and tools to thrive.
Additionally, through an incredible partnership with the Charlotte W. Newcombe Foundation, Alvernia is able to offer scholarships for returning or second-career women who are seldom able to qualify for financial aid. Since establishing the fund in 2016, more than 20 female students have been awarded scholarships creating pathways to graduation that were previously closed.
Alvernia women take pride in the number of women in senior leadership positions, the supportive environment provided for a healthy work-life balance, and the commitment to the advancement of women.
